How to Measure & Install Chain Link Privacy Slats

Count the fence, order the right boxes, and slat a run in an afternoon with no tools beyond snips.

Measuring the fence

  1. Fence height. Measure from the bottom rail or the ground to the top rail at a post. Slats are sold by length to match standard fence heights; pick the length that matches the mesh height, not the post.
  2. Run length. Measure each straight run post to post and add them up. Gates are measured on their own.
  3. Mesh size. FenPro slats fit standard 2 in chain link mesh. Measure the opening; other mesh sizes need a different slat width.
  4. Convert to boxes. Each product page lists the coverage per box for that slat length. Divide the total run by the coverage and round up; order one spare box for gates and a repair.

Installing Blade Slats and Hedge Slats

  1. Start at a post. Feed the first slat down through the diagonal openings of the mesh, top to bottom, following one row of diamonds.
  2. Keep the direction. Every slat follows the same diagonal so the fence reads as a solid wall; work along the run one diamond at a time.
  3. Lock the bottom. Feed the bottom-locking channel horizontally along the bottom rail through the tabs at the foot of each slat. The channel holds the slats in line and stops them lifting out.
  4. Trim at gates and posts. Cut slats to length with snips where a gate frame or an end post interrupts the run.

Installing fence privacy tape

Start at the top of the mesh at a post and weave the roll through the diamonds in a straight line, over and under, to the far post. Cut, then start the next line one diamond down. Reflective tape goes on the gate and the sections a driver needs to see; weave it the same way.

Care

Slats need no maintenance; rinse dust off with a hose. Check the bottom channel after the first season and push back any slat that has walked.
